Curriculum

What is Montessori Education?
Montessori education is characterized by multi-age classrooms, a prepared environment with a special set of educational materials, concrete materials which make concepts real and easier to internalize, student chosen work in long work periods, individual and small group instruction, and curriculum that permits children to progress at their own pace. Each child’s progress is monitored individually and lessons are offered to children when they are developmentally ready.

What is the goal of the Montessori Elementary Curriculum?
The goal is to educate the child for life. This is accomplished by:

  • Providing the child with the tools to become a learner independent of the adult
  • Developing within the child an understanding of how to learn
  • Providing the child with a social setting in which to develop appropriate social skills such as peaceful resolutions to conflict
  • Acquainting the child with the democratic process
  • Instilling in the child a respect for all living things
  • Encouraging the child to honor individuality and the differences in others
  • Giving the child a sense of belonging in the universe

What makes Journey Montessori Academy unique?
We believe that each child is an individual with unique gifts, interests, and abilities. We will teach each child at his/her own level and provide a framework for children to choose work in which they are interested and competent. We will provide enough information to spark interest in a topic and then allow the child to pursue her/his own interest in the subject. We believe that respect is important for children to feel and show. We will show respect to the children, people in our community, animals, and our belongings. Through open-minded observations and detailed record keeping, we will assess, plan, and teach to guide each child on his/her educational journey. We believe that children need to have a choice to move and socialize while they work. We will encourage children to move around the room as needed and to communicate with each other, as long as they respect others. We believe in open communication between parents and teachers and feel that together we can guide the individual child.
